Rotterdam Girl, 10, Found Safe After Amber Alert as Man Who Sheltered Her Is Released

Police say no other crimes are indicated, with the inquiry into the 69-year-old’s actions ongoing.

Overview

  • The child left her home on Paul Krugerstraat around 13:00 Saturday to go to a shop on the Hilledijk, had no phone, and cold conditions prompted an Amber Alert approved by a chief public prosecutor.
  • A neighbor recognized the girl on Sunday morning while she was walking a dog, brought her inside, alerted police, and the girl was checked by medics and reunited with her parents in good health.
  • The 69-year-old resident who had housed her was arrested on suspicion of unlawfully removing a minor from parental authority as officers searched his home and seized a dog.
  • Police later released the man while keeping the suspicion in place and reported finding no indications of other offenses as their investigation continues.
  • Authorities said the girl, who is of Ghanaian background and speaks limited Dutch but English, spent hours outside before approaching the man who was out walking his dog, and they noted Amber Alerts are rare, used roughly twice a year.
