Rooftop Solar to Drive 4.4 Million Clean-Energy Jobs in India by 2030

A CEEW–NRDC study finds decentralized rooftop installations create far more jobs per megawatt than large projects, which signals urgent needs for training and policy support.

Overview

  • The CEEW–NRDC analysis, published in early June 2026, projects more than 44 lakh full-time equivalent jobs in India’s clean-energy transition by 2030 tied to targets such as 500 GW of non-fossil capacity and the National Green Hydrogen Mission.
  • Rooftop solar is forecast to supply about 43% of those jobs because household- and business-scale installations require many more workers for outreach, surveys, design, installation and grid connection.
  • The study estimates rooftop solar yields about 45 FTE job-years per megawatt compared with roughly 1 FTE job-year per megawatt for ground-mounted solar and 0.6 for wind, making rooftop deployment far more job intensive.
  • Select clean-energy sectors added roughly 6.5 lakh workers between FY23 and FY26, with rooftop solar accounting for 62% of the increase and programmes like PM-KUSUM, biomass and ground-mounted solar making smaller contributions.
  • The report warns of large skill and gender gaps: about 60% of deployment roles need high or semi-skilled workers, 80–90% of manufacturing jobs require technical skills, and women make up roughly 11% of deployment and manufacturing workforces, mostly in non-technical roles.
