Overview
- A large portion of the tiled roof covering the building that houses the Samagra Shiksha Kerala district project office on the Central High School, Attakulangara campus collapsed with no injuries after staff had stepped outside.
- Students were in a separate concrete school building and the collapsed structure was an ancillary office roughly 100 metres from the classroom block, so there were no casualties reported.
- The office moved to the site about a year ago and received limited maintenance then—cleaning, painting, cabin setup and some leaking tile replacements—with the last recorded renovation in 2019.
- Kerala’s General Education Minister has asked the Deputy Director of Education for a report after being told roof work was restricted by the building’s heritage status and that a fitness certificate should have been obtained.
- Local officials and political leaders are publicly disputing responsibility for inspections and fitness certification, and the incident may trigger reviews of how heritage rules and municipal checks apply to non-classroom structures on school grounds.
