Overview
- A two-year-old pit bull mix named Roo bolted after being adopted and was later found huddled inside the Potrero Hill Caltrain tunnel, where he spent close to two days.
- Caltrain operators first thought the dog was dead until one driver saw him move, which prompted San Francisco Animal Care and Control officers to enter the pitch-black tunnel with Caltrain staff to rescue him.
- Officers led Roo out on a leash and he was taken for a veterinary check, where he was described as a little wobbly but otherwise given a clean bill of health.
- Roo was identified by his microchip and reunited with his owner, a step SFACC credited with enabling the prompt reunification.
- Officials said the Tuesday rescue was highly unusual in Caltrain’s experience and highlighted both the danger trains pose to loose animals and the value of microchipping and registering pets.
