Rondalla Revival Fills Navia as O Porriño Stages 17-Group Showcase Today

A recent film has amplified interest in the century-old Galician ensembles, bolstering free municipal festivals across the Vigo area.

Overview

  • Vigo’s eighth Certamen de Rondallas took place Jan. 10 in Navia, opening with a pasacalles along Calle Teixugueiras before performances in the municipal pavilion.
  • The local rondallas of Bembrive, Valadares, Beade and Zamáns performed at the free event organized by the Concello de Vigo.
  • Mayor Abel Caballero attended and promoted the gathering, highlighting the tradition’s intergenerational continuity.
  • Peña O Freixo did not participate as a mark of mourning for its late director, Xusto Figueroa, who was remembered during the certamen.
  • O Porriño hosts its certamen today at 5 p.m. with 17 ensembles at the municipal sports pavilion, each limited to 12 minutes, with a pre-event street march planned weather permitting.
