RomeFlorence Rail Shutdown for ERTMS Upgrade Triggers Nationwide Delays

RFI is switching on the ERTMS safety-control system to complete the RomeFlorence upgrade.

Overview

  • Rail traffic on the high-speed RomeFlorence corridor is suspended from Saturday at 00:00 to Sunday at 15:00, with the conventional OrteRoma Tiburtina stretch halted from Saturday 14:00 into early Sunday and long diversions routed along the Tyrrhenian coast.
  • Following Saturday morning’s technical fault near Orte on the conventional line, Trenitalia warned of up to 70 minutes of extra travel time before reporting a gradual recovery and a return to regular circulation by midday.
  • Operators cut the number of trains and lengthened journeys, with some Milan–Rome trips taking about six hours due to detours, and they asked passengers to check official apps and station boards where staffing has been reinforced.
  • The work activates ERTMS, a European train control system that sends speed and spacing data to the driver’s cab, finishing the upgrade on the AV RomeFlorence route under a program of about €147 million partly funded by Italy’s recovery plan.
  • Service is set to restart progressively from 15:00 on Sunday with residual disruption into Monday and full normality expected Tuesday, while on the Adriatic side the line near Petacciato reopened at 06:00 Friday under a yearlong state of emergency backed by €50 million.
