Rome to Charge €2 for Close Access to Trevi Fountain Starting Feb. 1, 2026

City officials describe the fee as a crowd-control measure, with revenue projected at €6.5 million a year.

Overview

  • Viewing the fountain from a distance will remain free, but close access will require a €2 ticket with free entry for all between 22:00 and 09:00.
  • Residents of the Rome metropolitan area will be exempt from the charge.
  • The plan also introduces €5 tickets at five other currently free municipal sites beginning the same date.
  • Authorities cite about nine million visitors to the Trevi area in 2025 with daily peaks near 70,000, following a 2024 cap limiting the site to 400 people at a time.
  • Officials say the system aims to ease congestion and deter pickpocketing, aligning with recent measures like Pantheon ticketing and Venice’s entry fee, with tickets available online or at the site.
