Rome Begins €2 Close-Up Access at Trevi Fountain, 6,400 on Day One

Officials say the €2 fee funds on-site staff to help protect the fountain from chronic crowding.

Overview

  • Access charges apply only to the inner perimeter near the basin, with the surrounding square remaining free to enter.
  • Hours are 11:30–22:00 on weekdays and 9:00–22:00 on weekends, with last entry at 21:00.
  • Exemptions cover metropolitan Rome residents, people with disabilities and companions, children under six, and licensed guides; tickets are sold online, at the site by card, and at tourist information centers.
  • A total of 6,406 people entered the controlled area on day one, including 6,320 paying visitors for €12,640 in revenue, after about 3,000 tickets were sold by 11:00 local time.
  • City projections estimate €6–6.5 million in annual revenue to fund 25 attendants and other cultural uses, following a year with over 10 million visits and earlier limits of roughly 400 visitors at a time; a consumer group criticized the new fee.
