- NASA and SpaceX have cleared the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope for liftoff from Kennedy Space Center on Sunday, Aug. 30, with the observatory riding a Falcon Heavy into an initial trajectory toward deep space.
- After separation the telescope will spend roughly a month traveling to the Sun–Earth L2 region about 1 million miles away and then undergo about 100 days of deployment, mirror alignment and instrument commissioning before routine surveys begin.
- Roman pairs Hubble‑class image quality with a field of view roughly 100 times larger, letting it survey the sky about 1,000 times faster and collect data on billions of galaxies and hundreds of millions of stars.
- The mission will run dedicated time‑domain surveys of the Milky Way’s crowded galactic bulge to search for transits and microlensing events that could yield on the order of 100,000 transiting planets and many microlensing detections, and it carries an experimental coronagraph to demonstrate technologies for future direct imaging of exoplanets.
- Roman has a roughly five‑year primary baseline with a possible five‑year extension, is designed to be refuellable because fuel is expected to limit mission life, and was delivered ahead of schedule and under the reported $4.3 billion budget after nearly two decades of development.
