Roman Space Telescope Could Operate for at Least 22 Years, NASA Says

NASA credits a highly precise Aug. 31 midcourse burn and extra propellant loaded at launch for a large fuel margin that lets teams begin instrument commissioning as the spacecraft heads to L2.

  • The mission team says the Aug. 31 midcourse correction used about 18 kilograms of propellant versus roughly 200 kilograms budgeted, a burn the agency calls more than 99% accurate.
  • Roman launched lighter than engineers had conservatively planned so teams filled the tanks to capacity before flight, which added several years to the observatory’s propellant baseline.
  • NASA has powered on the Wide Field Instrument and returned an initial test image showing first photons, and it has started early checks and a roughly 30-day decontamination for the Coronagraph Instrument.
  • The telescope is en route to the Sun–Earth L2 point with a small second course correction planned, an expected L2 insertion in early December, about 100 days of commissioning, and first public science images due in early 2027.
  • The extra fuel could enable far longer wide-field surveys and more exoplanet technology demos, but the 22-year figure is a potential estimate that depends on future maneuvers, instrument health, and funding.
