Rodalies Services Cut Across Catalonia After Fire, Electrical Fault and Vehicle Crash

Simultaneous infrastructure failures on a busy holiday disrupted commuter routes and highlighted persistent weaknesses on the R3 that could extend service problems.

Overview

  • A car fell onto R4 tracks in Sabadell on Wednesday, injuring four people and halting trains between Cerdanyola del Vallès and Terrassa for about an hour while Bombers de la Generalitat and SEM attended the scene.
  • A vegetation fire near Granollers–Canovelles forced Rodalies to suspend the entire R3 around midday and to deploy replacement buses on stretches where they were available.
  • An electrical supply fault between Sant Andreu and Montcada i Reixac fragmented R2 and R11 service, leaving R2 operating only as AeroportBarcelona Sants and Montcada i ReixacGranollers Centre and R11 running between Granollers Centre and Portbou.
  • Adif is working to repair the infrastructure faults while Renfe/Rodalies manages passenger diversions but reports lacking substitute buses for some affected sections and is advising travellers to use alternate public transport.
  • The incidents add to recent problems on the R3, including a cable theft the previous day and long-delayed works after a March factory wall collapse that is now subject to litigation and a planned full reopening in January 2027.
