Rochdale Station Reopens After Staff Shortage Shuts Early Trains

The town’s MP has demanded an explanation from Northern over the early‑morning closure.

Overview

  • Rochdale station failed to open for the first services on Tuesday due to a shortage of station staff, leaving passengers locked out.
  • Northern said the station opened at about 7:30am, with knock‑on disruption clearing shortly before 8am across affected routes.
  • Services between Manchester Victoria and Rochdale, Blackburn and Leeds, plus linked routes to Clitheroe, Chester, Wigan and Headbolt Lane, were disrupted.
  • Northern arranged ticket acceptance on Metrolink and TfGM buses and confirmed Delay Repay for delays of 15 minutes or more, with refunds for those who did not travel.
  • Labour MP Paul Waugh wrote to Northern seeking a full explanation and details of contingency measures, as the operator said it was looking into what went wrong.
