Roblox to Roll Out Age-Based Kids and Select Accounts in June

The plan links features to verified ages through stricter checks for players, creators, games.

Overview

  • Roblox, which announced the change on Monday, will auto-assign users to Roblox Kids (ages 5–8), Roblox Select (9–15), or standard accounts (16+) using facial age estimation or ID checks, with unverified users limited to younger-rated games and no chat.
  • Only games that clear a three-step screen will reach under-16 users, requiring creator ID verification, two-factor login and an active Roblox Plus subscription, followed by testing with 16+ players and real-time moderation, then a maturity rating with default exclusions for sensitive categories.
  • Chat defaults tighten for younger users, with Kids accounts having chat off by default and Select accounts gaining chat in stages by age, while parents can manage direct messages through age 15.
  • Parents get more control with tools to block or approve specific games and view activity, and accounts will automatically progress from Kids to Select at 9 and to standard at 16.
  • Roblox says over half of daily users have completed age checks and reports an average error of about ±1.4 years for under-18s, as the company responds to lawsuits and regulator pressure and prepares to shift to IARC regional ratings later this year.
