Robert Easom Jailed for 16 Years for Assault That Left Partner Paralysed

The judge said the attack capped eight years of coercive control, leaving Trudi Burgess permanently paralysed.

Overview

  • Preston Crown Court sentenced Easom, 57, to 16 years in custody plus a four-year extended licence, with at least two-thirds to be served before parole consideration.
  • A jury convicted him of causing grievous bodily harm with intent, after he had previously admitted coercive and controlling behaviour and two counts of actual bodily harm.
  • During the February 17, 2025 attack in Chipping, he forced Burgess’s head down with his bodyweight, breaking her neck and severing her spinal cord.
  • Easom initially told 999 and paramedics the injury was accidental and urged Burgess to say it happened during “play fighting” before she revealed the truth in hospital.
  • In a victim impact statement, Burgess detailed chronic pain, loss of independence and 24-hour care needs, while police and prosecutors described Easom as manipulative, controlling and dangerous.
