Road Worker Killed in Franklin County as Heavy Rains Flood South Mississippi

Officials warn Anchor Lake dam has little remaining storage capacity, meaning additional rain could force wider evacuations.

Overview

  • Officials confirmed late Thursday that a Franklin County road crew member was killed while assisting with storm cleanup operations, and the worker’s name and circumstances have not yet been released.
  • State agencies reported water rescues in Harrison County and multiple road closures in George, Hancock, Harrison, Pearl River and Stone counties as flooding spread across South Mississippi.
  • The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality says Anchor Lake dam is functioning with water flowing over its primary and auxiliary spillways but has very little storage left and could be quickly overwhelmed by more rain.
  • About 30 homes near the East Hobolochitto Creek basin have been evacuated as a precaution and the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency is coordinating remaining search, rescue and resource deployments while more than 10,400 power outages were reported.
  • Governor Tate Reeves called for support for road crews and first responders who face dangerous conditions and officials warned that additional rainfall could rapidly worsen flooding, strain infrastructure and expand evacuations.
