Road Closures Start Tuesday to Turn Downtown Detroit Into Grand Prix Circuit

Staggered reopenings run into early June so crews can complete multi-day setup and teardown.

Overview

  • Grand Prix organizers and city officials put closures into effect Tuesday, May 26, ahead of the May 29–31 Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix.
  • Woodward between Larned and State Street is fully closed through 5 a.m. on June 2 and several downtown streets have full or local-traffic-only restrictions with end dates into the first week of June.
  • I-375 southbound will be open only to local traffic and the southbound Lodge Freeway is slated to close from Larned to Griswold for the event.
  • Officials urge drivers to use transit options such as the People Mover, QLINE, DDOT and SMART buses, Transit Windsor, MoGo and designated rideshare zones because parking inside the footprint is very limited.
  • The temporary closures reflect the event’s annual need to convert public streets into a race circuit and will reshape downtown traffic patterns, transit routes and parking for the setup, race weekend and teardown period.
