Rivian R2's Real-World Range Varies Sharply by Driving Speed
Independent tests show the R2 can approach its 330-mile EPA rating in mixed driving or lose a large share of range during sustained highway runs.
Overview
- Edmunds tested a 2027 R2 Performance on 21-inch wheels and recorded 304 miles in its 60% city / 40% highway range route, about 92% of the EPA 330-mile estimate.
- A separate Out of Spec Reviews highway test that held 70 mph from full charge measured roughly 253 corrected miles, or about 77% of the EPA rating, showing a much bigger shortfall at high speed.
- Measured consumption in Edmunds’ test was 33.6 kWh per 100 miles versus the EPA’s 32 kWh per 100 miles, which helps explain the roughly 4.7% efficiency gap and the lower range result.
- Charging performance partly offsets range limits: Edmunds recorded a 187 kW peak and a 133 kW average with the R2 adding about 100 miles in 15 minutes, and Rivian says 10–80% takes 29 minutes.
- The R2 trades some highway efficiency for performance and utility—its dual motors produce 656 hp, it tows 4,400 pounds, and it has higher ground clearance—which shapes how buyers should weigh range versus capability and competition with longer-range rivals.
