Rivian Begins Public Deliveries of R2 With $57,990 Performance Launch Trim

Rivian is testing whether a lower-priced SUV with built‑in Autonomy+ hardware, staged software rollouts, expanded service capacity can deliver the scale needed for profitable production.

Overview

  • Rivian opened public customer deliveries and lifted media embargoes on Tuesday as it started handing over the R2 Performance with Launch Package, priced from $57,990 and built on a new mid‑size platform.
  • The launch Performance trim is a dual‑motor AWD model rated at 656 hp, 609 lb‑ft, an EPA estimate up to 330 miles and a 0–60 mph time of about 3.6 seconds.
  • Every R2 ships with hardware compatible with Rivian’s Autonomy+ system and includes a 60‑day trial, but several promised software features and apps such as Rivian Assistant, Pet Mode and certain streaming functions are not available at launch.
  • Rivian is inviting reservation holders to configure orders in rolling batches, says confirmed orders can deliver in two to six weeks, and production is running at a dedicated line in Normal, Illinois with a Georgia plant planned to begin assembly in late 2028.
  • Investors reacted negatively on launch day as initial lease quotes were higher than some buyers expected and Rivian shares fell, leaving the company’s wider volume and profit case dependent on cheaper R2 trims due in late 2026 and through 2027.
