Riverside Deputies Use Spike Strip and PIT to End Chase, Arrest Suspect and Recover Two Children

Investigators say the juveniles recovered were known to the driver and were unharmed while the case remains under active review

Overview

  • Riverside County deputies responded to an attempted kidnapping call in the 25000 block of Sweetgrass Drive and pursued a vehicle that fled instead of stopping.
  • The pursuit continued onto the 60 Freeway into Los Angeles County where deputies deployed a spike strip and then used a PIT maneuver after the driver exited at Rosemead Boulevard.
  • A Toyota Prius finally stopped near Rosemead Boulevard and Mabel Avenue, deputies smashed the driver’s window, removed and arrested the driver, and the suspect was medically evaluated at the scene.
  • Two juveniles were pulled from the back of the Prius, were known to the suspect, were uninjured, and received medical checks at the scene as a precaution.
  • Officials have not released the suspect’s identity or any charges yet and say the multi-jurisdictional case is an active investigation while standard pursuit tactics and interagency coordination are being reviewed.
