River Ouse Floods Parts of York as Warnings Remain in Force

Officials report defences operating with levels easing from a weekend peak.

Overview

  • The Viking Recorder showed 3.38 metres on Sunday evening after an earlier high of 3.68 metres, exceeding the threshold where property flooding is possible.
  • The Environment Agency issued warnings for riverside properties, including St George’s Field and Queen’s Staith, with further alerts for the Lower Derwent, the tidal Ouse from Naburn Lock to Selby, the Upper Ouse and the Upper Derwent.
  • The Foss Barrier and city-centre flood gates were in use as teams monitored conditions and urged residents to activate flood plans and protections.
  • Floodwater affected stretches from Lendal Bridge to Millennium Bridge and hotspots such as South Esplanade, Friars Terrace, Tower Place and Woodsmill Quay, with photos showing water above front doors.
  • About half of St George’s Field car park was underwater, pumps were deployed in nearby Ryedale on Saturday, and authorities told drivers not to enter flood water or low-lying routes.
