Rio to Replace Paper Parking Tickets With All‑Digital System Starting in August

Overview

• Rio’s mayor unveiled Friday a phased rollout of Rio Rotativo Digital across about 37,000 street spaces, with operations starting in August through the Jaé app.
• Drivers will open Jaé, which pinpoints the car’s location by GPS or QR code, enter the license plate and time, and pay R$2 for every two hours using app credits, Pix, or a credit card, up to six hours.
• Traditional paper tickets will end as the system validates stays, cross‑checks plates, and sends alerts to users within the app.
• Unpaid stays will trigger fines that the app forwards to CET‑Rio and the Transport Secretariat for processing based on the vehicle’s plate.
• Accredited verification agents will confirm payment with photos using a city app, earn R$1 per valid check paid directly by the municipality, begin credentialing in June, train and test in July, and start work in areas to be named, a model already used in other Brazilian capitals.
