Rio Launches R$74.2 Million Overhaul of Uruguaiana Market With 2028 Completion Goal

City hall casts the project as a path to formalize street trade under tighter oversight.

Overview

  • The tender is complete and Rio-Urbe will execute the works, starting with the executive project, topographic survey and site setup, with delivery targeted for early 2028.
  • The current complex will be demolished for a three-storey, 15,600 m² building with about 1,600 stalls, a supermarket, two food courts, restrooms, loading areas, natural ventilation and fire‑prevention systems.
  • About 8,400 m² of the surroundings will be reurbanized with accessible sidewalks, new street furniture, 1,800 m² of gardens and 60 trees, creating a roughly 5,000 m² boulevard linking Rua Uruguaiana to Avenida Presidente Vargas.
  • Officials say irregular vendors in the Centro will be phased out by absorbing them into formal stalls, with the vice mayor stressing the space is for regularized, lawful commerce.
  • The launch fulfills a pledge made after a 2025 fire damaged market stalls and follows earlier restrictions tied to police probes into the resale of stolen cell phones in the area.
