Rio Launches Projection-Mapped 'Nutcracker' and Rocinha’s 'Enchanted City' for the Holidays

Free nightly programs widen access to seasonal arts across both landmark and neighborhood settings.

Overview

  • Theatro Municipal’s facade now hosts a free ten‑minute projection mapping inspired by The Nutcracker nightly through December 28, with sessions from 6:40 p.m. to 10 p.m. and no shows on December 24–25.
  • Each projection includes a countdown to the next session, complementing a concurrent sold‑out run of the ballet inside the theater.
  • The theater’s atrium features a five‑meter Christmas tree with 720 ornaments and 8,400 LED lights, and a free Ópera do Meio‑Dia holiday edition is scheduled for December 18 at noon.
  • The Boulevard beside the theater has been themed as a Christmas Village with set design and interactive attractions available to visitors.
  • Rocinha’s Cidade Encantada lights Via Ápia every night from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. through January 5, launched with local orchestra performances, a community show, gift distribution, and resident participation in the build; the Theatro projection was created by Deeplab.
