Overview
- PIX payments will be available on 100% of the municipal bus fleet starting Saturday, May 30, and the city has postponed the ban on cash fares until June 28.
- Contactless credit and debit payments using NFC are scheduled to begin rolling out on June 15 and to be expanded across the system through the end of June.
- Payments made by PIX or NFC will not join the Bilhete Único Carioca integration, so riders using those methods will be charged the full fare on each boarding.
- The Tribunal de Justiça ordered a 30-day transition to reduce the risk of excluding unbanked or technology‑averse users and to allow more PIX terminals and cash top-up points to be installed.
- The shift builds on the Jaé bilhetagem rollout that replaced Riocard and follows long-running disputes over operators’ fare data, with the mayor citing suspected 'caixa-preta' discrepancies as a reason to move away from cash.
