Overview
- The city formalized the Distrito de Arte e Cultura da Lapa by decree and began on-site works for the Boulevard Selarón on Friday, July 3.
- The initial intervention is budgeted at R$1.7 million and covers roughly 2,000 square meters across Rua Joaquim Silva, Rua Teotônio Regadas and Rua Visconde de Maranguape.
- Planned works include 227 meters of new paving, requalification of 114 meters of sidewalks, modernization of urban infrastructure, a boarding bay for tourist buses and conversion of Teotônio Regadas into a raised service lane.
- The Secretaria Municipal de Cultura will coordinate the district with a multi-stakeholder Comitê Gestor and will link actions to existing Reviver programs while a full project is due within 60 days and a memorial to Jorge Selarón was announced.
- The Escadaria Selarón draws more than 1.5 million visitors a year, so the project aims to improve accessibility and pedestrian flow around a major tourist site but its modest budget signals a staged effort that will depend on the forthcoming governance plan for larger impacts.
