Rings of Power Season 3 Pivots Toward Middle-earth's Darkest Chapter

Showrunners say this season will depict Sauron forging the One Ring in an extended, technically demanding sequence and will stream on Prime Video on November 11, 2026.

Overview

  • Showrunners Patrick McKay and J. D. Payne told Empire in interviews published July 20–22 that Season 3 will show Sauron openly making the One Ring, a move they say changes the series’ tone.
  • Charlie Vickers appears in first-look photos as Sauron in full crown and armor, and actors and creators say the forging sequence was shot over roughly two weeks and is the production’s most ambitious set piece.
  • Daniel Weyman’s Stranger fully becomes Gandalf the Grey in Season 3, including the hat and traditional wizard elements that the showrunners asked him to adopt.
  • The season jumps forward several years to the height of the War of the Elves and Sauron, tightening and converging storylines that previous seasons had set up and creating a darker, more dangerous narrative where few characters are safe.
  • Prime Video is mounting a coordinated marketing push with SDCC banners and a trailer, and the November 11, 2026 release positions Season 3 as a bridge to core Lord of the Rings lore and future seasons of the planned saga.
