Rijksmuseum Secures €60 Million to Create Public Sculpture Garden

The museum aims to open the new site next autumn pending permits.

Overview

  • The gift will fund the transformation of three former pumping-station pavilions and their grounds into a publicly accessible sculpture garden near the museum.
  • Foster + Partners has been named to redesign the pavilions, and Belgian landscape architect Piet Blanckaert will design the garden.
  • The Rijksmuseum attributes the donation to the Don Quixote Foundation, while FD reports it comes from the Van Rappard family.
  • A permit application has been filed, and opening hours will be set in consultation with Amsterdam officials and local residents.
  • Plans call for 22 new mature trees and more native planting, with some sculptures also donated by the benefactor.
