Rijksmuseum Confirms 1633 Painting as Rembrandt, Public Debut Set for March 4

The attribution follows two years of technical analyses that align the work with Rembrandt’s early Amsterdam technique.

Overview

  • The authenticated work, titled “Vision de Zacharie dans le temple,” comes from a private collection and had been overlooked for decades after being excluded from Rembrandt’s oeuvre until 1960.
  • Researchers used imaging, paint-layer and material studies, dendrochronology, and evidence of the artist’s own revisions, applying methods refined during the Night Watch restoration.
  • Curators report the pigments, stratigraphy, and brushwork match Rembrandt’s practice around 1633, when he was about 27 and increasingly focused on biblical narratives in Amsterdam.
  • The scene shows the biblical high priest Zechariah in shadow with gilded details catching light from the upper right, signaling the arrival of the archangel Gabriel.
  • The owner contacted the museum to request a new assessment, and the painting will be on long-term loan to the Rijksmuseum following its public unveiling.
