Richard Sterne Wins Soudal Open to End 13-Year DP World Tour Drought

The victory, capped by an eagle on the par-five 17th, should lift the 44-year-old sharply in the Race to Dubai standings.

Overview

  • Sterne closed the Soudal Open at Rinkven in Antwerp with rounds of 64, 68, 68 and 66 to finish 18-under-par and win by two shots on Sunday.
  • He surged in the final round, making birdies early and tapping in an eagle on the 17th that pushed him clear of a six-player tie for second at 16-under.
  • Overnight leader Zander Lombard collapsed on the back nine, carding a 74 and falling to a tie for eighth after two bogeys and a double-bogey in his last five holes.
  • Sterne said the win caps a long comeback after multiple operations, including three wrist surgeries, a disc replacement and hip surgery, and it is his seventh DP World Tour title.
  • The result is set to move Sterne dramatically up the Race to Dubai table and gives him momentum as the DP World Tour heads to the Austrian Alpine Open next week.
