Richard Linklater to Receive Zurich Film Festival’s Career Achievement Golden Eye

A retrospective plus a public masterclass will spotlight his decades-long influence on American independent cinema.

Overview

  • The Zurich Film Festival announced Thursday, June 18, 2026, that Linklater will accept the Golden Eye career achievement award in person on Sept. 28 at the Filmpodium Zürich.
  • As part of the honor, the festival will run an extensive retrospective of his films in collaboration with Filmpodium Zürich and the Cinémathèque suisse and present a public ZFF Masters session with the director.
  • ZFF CEO Christian Jungen framed the prize as recognition of Linklater’s naturalistic dialogue and generational impact, singling out the Before trilogy and Boyhood as works that reshaped modern indie filmmaking.
  • Linklater said he was “truly honored” and that the award offers a chance to connect with European audiences; he is also known for founding and leading the Austin Film Society, which has funded and shown films in Texas for decades.
  • The festival runs Sept. 24–Oct. 4, 2026, and the programming will bring renewed attention to Linklater’s recent films such as Hit Man (2023) and Nouvelle Vague (2025) while highlighting his long-term methods like the multi-year production of Boyhood.
