Retired Brigadier Killed by Stray Bullet in Dehradun Shootout Tied to Nightclub Dispute

Uttarakhand orders tougher night checks after the killing, with seven police teams hunting suspects.

Overview

  • A Monday morning shootout between two cars on Mussoorie Road left retired Brigadier M.K. Joshi fatally hit by a stray round during his walk in the Rajpur area.
  • Police say the clash grew from a late-night fight over a bill at the Gen Z club, after which the rival groups left in a Fortuner and a Scorpio and met again at dawn in a high-speed chase.
  • During the pursuit, shots were fired at the Fortuner’s tyres, the SUV crashed near Johri’s primary school, and men from the chasing car beat its occupants as two were injured.
  • Investigators arrested four men including club owner Sandeep Kumar, Aditya Chaudhary, Rohit Kumar and Mohammad Akhlaq, seized both vehicles and two country-made pistols, and deployed seven teams to find four absconding suspects.
  • Authorities sealed the club, moved to cancel its licence, suspended a police outpost chief and an excise official, and announced an enforcement drive called Operation Prahar to curb late-night violence.
