Retailers Announce Patchwork of Closures and Special Hours for San Juan Holiday

Regional holiday rules plus tourist-area exemptions will leave shoppers facing closures or reduced hours on Wednesday, June 24.

Overview

  • Many supermarkets and shops will be closed or operate reduced schedules on Wednesday, June 24 in autonomous communities that treat San Juan as a public holiday, notably the Valencian Community, Catalonia and Galicia.
  • Mercadona confirmed it will shut most stores in the affected regions on June 24 but will open selected coastal and tourist-area outlets on a reduced 9:00–15:00 schedule.
  • Several large shopping centres in Valencia that sit in Zones of Great Tourist Attendance will open on a special 11:00–21:00 timetable while some other malls will limit access to leisure and dining areas only.
  • Chains vary by format: Carrefour said some Carrefour Express shops will operate roughly 10:00–15:00 while its hypermarkets will remain closed, and other groups such as Aldi and some hypermarkets plan different arrangements, so hours change by outlet.
  • Retailers and local media strongly advise checking each store’s online locator because opening rules are set by regional calendars, municipal permits and tourist exemptions and the eve of the holiday (June 23) generally remains on normal hours.
