Ressaca Damages Leblon Pier, Shuts Ciclovia Tim Maia

Overview

• Powerful surf damaged the wooden deck at the Mirante do Leblon pier, forcing an interdiction of the lookout and keeping the Ciclovia Tim Maia closed for safety.
• High waves pushed sand onto Avenida Delfim Moreira, where Comlurb sent 70 workers who cleared about 18 tonnes to be returned to the beach.
• The Navy warned of waves reaching about three meters through the morning, and those conditions prompted closures and repair plans along the shore.
• Coastal engineers say Ipanema and Leblon have lost roughly two meters of beach height over decades, which brought the sea about 40 meters closer and removed an estimated 2 million cubic meters of sand.
• The same surge ripped part of a wooden walkway in Santos, where officials reported no injuries, isolated the area, and scheduled demolition and rebuilding of the damaged span.
