Residents Form National PFAS Network in Japan

Groups intend to coordinate testing, support petitions, lead public outreach to press authorities for transparency and cleanup.

Overview

  • Resident organizations from Okayama, Hyogo and Osaka held an online meeting to launch PFAS全国連絡会, bringing together 52 groups across 20 prefectures to work together on contamination responses.
  • The new network plans to share data, back signature campaigns and amplify public information so local findings and worries about PFAS reach wider audiences and officials.
  • High local detections that helped spur the move include Kibichuo Town’s October 2023 disclosure of PFAS at some water plants at about 28 times Japan’s guideline and later high levels found in Settsu City groundwater.
  • PFAS are persistent, synthetic fluorinated compounds used in many products, some types are suspected carcinogens, and civic groups say Japan needs more testing, clearer disclosure and stronger cleanup measures.
  • Local water authorities are already adding removal steps such as high‑performance granular activated carbon at treatment plants, and the new network could increase pressure on governments to widen testing and fund remediation.
