Researchers Release Nearly 700 Patient-Derived Cancer Models

It gives researchers openly available organoid models with linked genomic data to speed target validation.

  • The Human Cancer Models Initiative, which published its findings Wednesday, provided nearly 700 new patient-derived models that cover 25 cancer types including about 150 rare tumors.
  • Most models are organoids, three-dimensional cultures that preserve the original tumor's genetics and molecular features better than traditional flat cell lines.
  • Teams ran high-throughput sequencing and CRISPR loss-of-function screens across hundreds of models to map thousands of gene dependencies and link specific vulnerabilities to genomic and clinical features.
  • All models and their linked patient, genomic, and screening data have been deposited at the American Type Culture Collection and integrated into the Broad Institute's Cancer Dependency Map for public use.
  • The collection expands tools for drug discovery and resistance research but converted only about one-third of submitted tumors and will require continued sample diversity, model growth, and clinical follow-up to realize translational impact.
