Researcher Turns Retail PS5 Into Linux Gaming PC, Runs GTA V With Ray Tracing at 60 FPS

Nguyen's proof-of-concept uses an early‑firmware exploit with Mesa patches to enable PS5 GPU features under Linux.

Overview

  • Security researcher Andy Nguyen chained exploits using the Byepervisor project to bypass Sony’s hypervisor on older PS5 firmware in the 1.xx–2.xx range.
  • He submitted patches to the Mesa graphics stack so Linux can access the PS5’s RDNA 2 GPU features, including Vulkan ray tracing.
  • The demo shows Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced running at 1440p and 60 frames per second, with working 4K HDMI output, audio, and all USB ports.
  • Nguyen reports stable operation at 3.2 GHz CPU and 2.0 GHz GPU, while higher clocks up to 3.5 GHz and 2.23 GHz cause the PS5 Slim to overheat.
  • The method remains niche because it requires unpatched consoles and GPU acceleration under Linux is still incomplete.
