Rescued Dogs Rebound After Squalid County Durham Allotment Find

Out-of-date microchips have left investigators still seeking who kept the animals.

Overview

  • Eight dogs and three chickens were seized near Peterlee in December after officers found pens fouled with faeces, piles of rubbish, and boxes of rotting chicken.
  • Roo, a Kangal-type with severe sarcoptic mange and a painful eye condition called entropion, had surgery and is now in care at the RSPCA’s Felledge centre.
  • Other dogs were underweight or carrying old wounds and are now spread across RSPCA centres and a North Yorkshire boarding facility, with Fig and Daisy rehomed and Minnie ready for adoption.
  • Efforts to identify an owner have stalled because only three dogs were microchipped and all listed out-of-date contacts, so the RSPCA is appealing for information on 0300 123 8018 using reference 01692434.
  • The three chickens, found dehydrated in a wired-topped box, have recovered and are being cared for at the RSPCA’s Great Ayton centre near Middlesbrough.
