Rescued Bhayander Leopard Found Dead Weeks After Release in Thane’s Nagla Forest

Authorities await autopsy results following a monitored release with no immediate signs of poaching.

Overview

  • A male leopard rescued from a Bhayander housing complex on December 19, 2025 was medically cleared at SGNP and fitted with a satellite GPS collar and microchip before release.
  • It was released on December 25 into the Nagla block of the Yeoor forest range within the Sanjay Gandhi National Park ecosystem under Thane Forest Division oversight.
  • Monitoring showed the animal moving through the Sasunavghar sector from December 25–30, hunting a dog on December 31, and appearing healthy on camera traps on January 5.
  • The carcass was found on February 2 in the Nagla reserve forest with body parts intact, prompting officials to tentatively rule out immediate signs of poaching.
  • A postmortem has been conducted and a probe is underway to determine the cause of death, with results pending from the Forest Department.
