Overview
- The group of villagers entered a cave in Xaisomboun province to look for gold on May 19 and became trapped after heavy rain and a landslip flooded and blocked the exit.
- Rescuers say divers have navigated about 100 metres into flooded passages and teams broke through roughly 15 metres of obstruction on May 25, with an estimated 20–30 metres still to reach the suspected chamber; no contact with the trapped people has been confirmed.
- The operation faces extreme technical limits because some passages are only about 60 centimetres high, the route may extend 340 metres from the entrance, and rescue crews must manage rising water, unstable sediment and low oxygen.
