Reports Say CENTCOM Is Using Outdated U.S. Casualty Counts in Iran War

Independent tallies point to higher losses alongside extensive base damage.

Overview

  • CENTCOM’s statement on Monday put the wounded at about 303, but reporters found it was three days old and left out at least 15 troops hurt at Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia.
  • CENTCOM did not provide updated totals or name which U.S. bases were hit, according to The Intercept, which said a spokesperson declined to share details.
  • Independent reporting estimates roughly 15 U.S. service members have been killed since late February, citing six in a Kuwait strike, six in a KC-135 crash in Iraq, and one in Saudi Arabia, while CENTCOM has not released a death count.
  • Earlier injury tallies did not appear to include more than 200 sailors treated for smoke inhalation after a March 12 fire on the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford.
  • Analysts estimate about $800 million in damage to U.S. bases, with reports that many Gulf facilities are now barely usable and some personnel working from hotels and offices.
