Renowned Flight Instructor Ron Timmermans and Wife Killed in Texas Crash as NTSB Investigates

Overview

  • Shortly before 5:20 p.m. CST on February 11, the pilots declared an emergency over East Texas reporting oil suddenly covering the windshield, according to the FAA.
  • While diverting to Echo Lake Airport near Brownsboro in a Beechcraft A36, the airplane struck power lines and came down nose-first short of the runway.
  • The NTSB said the investigation is ongoing, with data-capable devices retrieved from the aircraft and the wreckage moved to a secure facility for examination.
  • Ron Timmermans, a Master CFI with more than 9,000 flight hours, was the FAA’s 2021 National Certificated Flight Instructor of the Year and a 2022 CFI Hall of Fame inductee.
  • Local reports say the couple’s small dog survived the crash and was rescued and cared for by nearby residents.
