Overview
- Reniec, in a resolution published Monday in El Peruano, approved the use of the yellow DNI (issued to minors) for eligible first-time voters in the April 12 general election.
- Citizens who turn 18 on or before election day may present the yellow DNI, even if it is expired, and the authorization applies only for that single day of voting.
- Expired adult IDs are also valid for voting that day under an earlier Reniec measure, which extended the validity of blue and electronic DNIs through April 12 (Resolution 000030-2026).
- The National Jury of Elections issued a favorable opinion calling the valid-DNI rule instrumental, and Reniec notified ONPE and the JNE so polling stations apply the change correctly.
- To boost readiness, Reniec will open offices over the Easter holiday to deliver some 700,000 printed IDs still awaiting pickup, addressing a roll that lists 103,827 voters with a minor’s DNI.
