Rene Matić Wins 2026 Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize

Jurors praised the community-rooted installation for stretching what photography can be.

Overview

  • Matić was named the winner at The Photographers’ Gallery in London, receiving £30,000 for AS OPPOSED TO THE TRUTH.
  • The work began as an exhibition at CCA Berlin in late 2024 and was reworked for the Prize show now on view in London through 7 June.
  • Shoair Mavlian called the project deeply personal and grounded in belonging, and Anne‑Marie Beckmann said it expands how audiences experience photography.
  • Jane Evelyn Atwood, Weronika Gęsicka and Amak Mahmoodian were the other finalists, and each receives £5,000.
  • Matić is the first British winner in more than a decade and, born in 1997, is among the youngest to take the award, which honors the past year’s most significant contribution to photography in Europe.
