Overview
- A Moroccan military team recovered 1st Lt. Kendrick Lamont Key Jr.'s remains Saturday near the Cap Draa shoreline about a mile from where two soldiers entered the water.
- Search teams are still looking for the second soldier and have deployed more than 1,000 U.S. and Moroccan personnel with aircraft, drones, ships, and ground units.
- The soldiers were reported missing May 2 after an off-duty hike near ocean cliffs, and a preliminary report says one fell into the water and another tried to rescue him.
- Moroccan forces flew Key’s remains to Moulay El Hassan Military Hospital in Guelmim, and U.S. officials have notified next of kin and are arranging repatriation.
- The incident happened during African Lion, the U.S. military’s largest annual exercise in Africa, and commanders credited Moroccan mountaineer, dive, air, and maritime teams for extensive support.
