Reina Sofía Unveils Alberto Greco Retrospective, ‘Viva el Arte Vivo’

The eight-room survey gathers more than 200 works and fragile archival pieces on loan, which the museum describes as difficult to replicate.

Overview

  • On view from February 11 to June 8, 2026, the exhibition occupies Floor 0 of the Sabatini building in Madrid.
  • Curated by Argentine scholar Fernando Davis, the show traces Greco’s trajectory from late-1940s experiments through 1965 across drawings, collages, writings and documented actions.
  • A central focus is the 1962 concept of “arte vivo” (later “vivo-dito”), which reframed art as actions in public space and community participation.
  • Key episodes include the Piedralaves project and a Madrid collective metro ride that ended with the burning of a large painted cloth, alongside early objets vivants at Galería Juana Mordó.
  • Rare materials on display include fragments of the nearly 300‑meter manifesto-roll, with significant loans from the Museo de Arte Moderno de Buenos Aires, MoMA, Patio Herreriano, IVAM, Galería Del Infinito and private collections.
