Reds Put Nick Lodolo on 15-Day IL for Finger Blister

Cincinnati is choosing caution to keep a small issue from becoming a long absence for a key starter.

Overview

  • Cincinnati placed the left-hander on the 15-day injured list for a left index finger blister, a move the club confirmed Tuesday that is backdated to March 22 and makes him eligible to return in about 13 days.
  • The problem surfaced Sunday when he left his final Cactus League start after 10 pitches, the third straight year a blister has led to an IL stint.
  • Manager Terry Francona said the team wants to avoid a torn blister from a breaking ball that could turn a couple missed starts into a month out.
  • With Hunter Greene rehabbing from elbow surgery, Andrew Abbott will start Opening Day, with Brady Singer and Rhett Lowder following against Boston and Chase Burns and Brandon Williamson set for the first two games against Pittsburgh.
  • In other moves, the Reds placed reliever Caleb Ferguson on the 15-day IL with an oblique strain and recalled right-hander Jose Franco from Triple-A.
