Reds Ace Hunter Greene Set for Elbow MRI With Throwing Halted

Next week's imaging plus specialist opinions will determine the 26-year-old's Opening Day outlook.

Overview

  • Manager Terry Francona said Greene will have an MRI on Friday after reporting right-elbow stiffness and will not throw until at least Tuesday.
  • Greene left camp to be examined by team physician Dr. Timothy Kremchek and will also seek a second opinion from Dr. Neal ElAttrache, who performed his 2019 Tommy John surgery.
  • Greene told reporters there is no UCL damage, noted known bone spurs, and said the discomfort surfaced late last season after which he received an offseason injection.
  • The right-hander would not commit to making his first start of 2026, and he has pitched just one Cactus League inning this spring.
  • Reds president Nick Krall indicated the club does not plan to pursue free-agent starters, citing internal options such as Andrew Abbott, Nick Lodolo, Brady Singer, and prospects Chase Burns and Rhett Lowder.
