Reddit to Join S&P 500, Forcing Nearly $3 Billion of Index Buying

Forced purchases by index-tracking funds could strain liquidity, leaving the stock vulnerable after the rebalance.

Overview

  • S&P Dow Jones confirmed Reddit will be added to the S&P 500 before the open on Aug. 18, creating a mandatory reweighting for funds that track the index.
  • J.P. Morgan estimates those funds will need about 16.7 million Reddit shares, roughly $2.9 billion at recent prices and about three times Reddit’s average daily trading volume since its 2024 IPO.
  • The announcement already pushed the stock up more than 11% as traders and passive funds bought ahead of inclusion, a pattern seen historically when firms are added to the index.
  • Underlying business risks remain: Reddit said choppy search-engine referrals in Q2 hurt U.S. user growth, and the stock is down roughly 31% this year and about 42% from its September 2025 peak.
  • Investors should watch how quickly index flows are absorbed and whether buying stops after Aug. 18, because past additions have often given back gains and then lagged the S&P over the following months.
