Overview
- Boston completed the trade for three-time All-Star catcher Adley Rutschman on Monday, sending Carlos Narváez, prospects Anthony Eyanson, Kyson Witherspoon, Enddy Azocar and a player to be named later to Baltimore while also acquiring Jake Rogers.
- The deal required extra pre-trade medical checks before it was finalized and team doctors will set a formal rehab plan after evaluating Rutschman’s left wrist inflammation.
- Rutschman is on the injured list and currently in a hitting progression at Fenway Park, where he has been meeting with Red Sox medical staff and appeared in the home dugout but did not play.
- Manager Chad Tracy called Rutschman a “huge addition,” and Rutschman said he is excited to join the club and to help Boston’s pitching staff and lineup when he is cleared to play.
- The trade strengthens Boston’s catching depth and postseason prospects now and raises short-term roster questions because Rutschman has played only 67 games this season due to multiple IL stints and the Red Sox surrendered top organizational prospects to make the move.
