Red Flag Warning Covers 66 Minnesota Counties as Burn Restrictions Expand North

Warm, dry winds raise fire risk statewide.

Overview

  • The Red Flag Warning, in effect through 8 p.m. Monday, warns that fires could spread fast in warm, dry, windy conditions.
  • The DNR expanded open burning restrictions at 8 a.m. Monday, adding Becker, Beltrami North, Carlton, Clearwater, Itasca, Kittson, Koochiching, Lake of the Woods, Mahnomen, Marshall, Pennington, Polk, Red Lake, Roseau and St. Louis until further notice.
  • During the warning, the DNR will not issue or activate permits for large vegetative debris burning and says campfires should be avoided.
  • Forecasters expect 20–30 mph wind gusts with low humidity, and the DNR warns embers can travel over a mile in such conditions.
  • Residents are urged to compost, chip or haul brush instead of burning, and anyone whose fire rekindles or escapes is legally liable for damages.
